What is a Hands-Free Mouse? 

A hands-free mouse is any technology that enables control of a mouse pointer on the display screen, without having to use physical touch or motion of hands.  One note of caution—while many computer mice are being marketed out there as “hands-free mice,” they fail the simple litmus of not requiring the user to use their hands.  

Types of Truly Hands-Free Mice

The following are types of truly hands-free mouse systems:

  • Low-tech head pointers: These typically involve headgear that looks like a slender stick mounted on the user’s head.  The user then points to different areas on a touch screen by moving their head to touch different areas on the screen using the distant end of the stick. Such pointers could also be used for clicking on keyboards.  Given the fixed length of the stick mounted on the user’s head, it can necessitate the user to be at an appropriate distance from the screen and can be cumbersome to use.
  • Low-tech mouth sticks: These operate very similarly to the low-tech head pointers but have the user hold a stick in the mouth to touch it to various parts of the screen. This method can also be cumbersome to use.
  • High-tech head pointers (head mouse):   These solutions involve measuring head motions electro-mechanically or optically to translate them into mouse pointer motions on a computer screen.
    • The first type involves head gear with included motion sensors (typically MEMS gyroscopic sensors) that measure head rotations to translate them into mouse motion.  The headgear typically looks like a headband, headset, eyeglasses, or a small boxy device that can be mounted on the user’s eyeglasses.
    • The second type includes the use of specialized cameras or a webcam mounted on or near the computer monitor.  The cameras measure head motions and then translate them into mouse pointer motions.  Head mice can also require the user to wear a reflective dot, typically on their forehead, so that the camera can measure the user’s head motion.

While both these methods cater to the motion of the mouse pointer, they cannot by themselves provide a clicking method, which is one of the key functions of a computer mouse.  They, therefore, must resort to either of the following two methods—

  • Use of dwell clicking.  Dwell clicking is when the head mouse issues a click signal every time the user steadies their head for a minimum set time. Therefore, for example, if the user holds their head steady for 1 second, then the head mouse issues a click signal and therefore, whatever is under the mouse pointer at that time gets clicked.  While this is an easy way of causing clicks, it can lead to many unintentional clicks/selections on the screen, thereby causing unintended results, additional effort to correct the result of those unintentional clicks, and, thereby, user frustration.  This problem is often referred to as the “Midas Touch” issue.  To minimize this issue, head mice typically come with a mechanism to pause and activate dwell clicking.  However, this means that the user has to take additional actions to manage the clicking activation constantly.  Furthermore, dwell clicking time has to be set appropriately differently for different activities. Otherwise, it can either feel too slow for certain activities or too fast for others.

Use of an adaptive switch: This is an accessory, such as a sip-and-puff switch, a bite switch, or a foot switch, used to initiate a selection (left or right switch).  This method eliminates the Midas Touch issue and thereby can be much more convenient as the user can precisely choose when they want to click with minimal bodily actions.  However, the user does need to buy this additional accessory and have it mounted around their face or their body.  Quite often, it involved putting something in their mouth (such as a sip-and-puff switch or a bite switch,) which can be a sanitary issue as well as a convenience issue.

  • Mouth-operated joy sticks: These are specially designed computer joy sticks that can be mounted near the user’s mouth and be operated by the user using their mouth.  These avoid the Midas Touch issue, both with the mouse pointer motion as well as mouse click function.  However, again, this brings the extra cost and effort of having to install them near the user’s face and also sanitary issues due to having to put the joystick in the mouth.
  • Eye Trackers: These are hardware accessories with specialized sensors (that typically include infrared cameras and illuminators) to track the user’s eyes and determine where the user is looking on the screen.  The system then moves the mouse pointer to where the user is looking on the screen or performs a dwell click upon the user continuing to look at the same spot for more than a set minimum time.  The advantage of this method is that the user has to simply look in the right direction to move the mouse or click.   However, this method still has the same Midas Touch issue that is associated with dwell clicking.  We humans intuitively use our eyes to look at and learn about our surroundings, including what is presented to us on a computer screen; given that this method also utilizes the same action to select items on the screen, that makes for a long learning curve.  Some eye tracking systems, therefore, also provide additional software to get around the Midas Touch issue by having to look at a sequence of icons to confirm their intention.  This, in turn, causes the users to have to go through additional steps to achieve basic commands such as left or right click, which then contribute to the tiredness of the eyes. Some users, therefore, also use supplementary accessories such as adaptive switches to perform instantaneous clicks at the desired location.  Another issue typical with the eye gaze system is the inherent inaccuracy in the determination of the user’s eye gaze, which in turn leads to inaccuracies in mouse pointer placement.  Some eye gaze systems, therefore, resort to making the user go through additional steps to improve the accuracy of mouse pointer location.
  • Voice commands via speech recognition: Speech recognition is typically used to convert a user’s speech into typed text, which is the typical function of a keyboard and not a mouse.  However, voice commands recognized by the system can also help in moving the mouse pointer to the desired location.  Therefore, this method is also considered a voice-controlled “hands-free mouse” technology.  There are two types of methods used in this approach–
    • Clicking on icons by using numbers: Using this method, the user first gives a voice command to have the system provide numeral identification of each clickable icon on the screen.  As the second step, the user then speaks out the identification number which they want to be clicked.  While this method works well for clickable icons on the screen, it does not work well when there are no clickable icons on the desktop or inside the window where the user needs to click.
    • Clicking anywhere using grids: Using this method, the user first gives a voice command to show a grid on the screen, typically 3 cells x 3 cells in size.  As the second command, the user then speaks out the grid cell number, which contains the desired location to place the mouse; as a result, the pointer moves to the center of that cell.  The user then repeats the second step to subdivide the chosen grid cell into smaller grid cells, choosing them by voice to further refine the pointer placement.  This process needs to be continued until the requisite pointer placement is achieved.  While this method works for placing the pointer in areas of the screen where there are no icons, this method can get tedious, and not suitable where quick placement is desired, such as when playing games or for productivity applications.

Head, Face, and Eye Tracking: This method utilizes head tracking and, optionally, eye tracking, along with face gesture recognition, to not only provide quick and precise pointer placements but also mouse clicking and scrolling actions by means of facial expressions.  The user can simply look toward their target on the screen, and the pointer moves in accordance with their head motion (and optionally their eye gaze).  Once the pointer is at the right location, the user can simply perform natural, subtle facial gestures such as a smile, raising eyebrows, opening their mouth, blinking, etc,.
